Raja Warring denies reports of resignation demand after Congress setback in Tarn Taran bypoll

Chandigarh:Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Friday dismissed speculation that the party had sought his resignation following its poor performance in the Tarn Taran by-election, where the Congress forfeited its deposit. Speaking to reporters in Chandigarh, Warring said no such conversation had taken place within the party.

“The party has never asked for my resignation. We don’t ask for resignations, we announce new presidents. If the party ever talks about it, I will be the first to announce it. I will not hide it,” he said. Warring added that rumours about his resignation were “false propaganda” being spread at the behest of the government.

The Congress’s disappointing result in the bypoll has sparked internal discussion about potential leadership changes ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi has been signalling that he can unify the party in Punjab.

According to party sources, some leaders believe handing the state unit’s command to Channi could strengthen his claim to the chief minister’s post if the Congress returns to power.
