Rajinder Gupta elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Punjab

Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Rajinder Gupta has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab. Friday marked the last day for the withdrawal of nomination papers, following which Madhu Gupta withdrew her nomination, paving the way for Rajinder Gupta’s unopposed victory.

The Returning Officer for the Rajya Sabha bypoll, Ram Lok Khatana, issued the certificate of election to Gupta. With his election, AAP now has seven members representing Punjab in the Upper House.

The seat had fallen vacant after Sanjeev Arora resigned from the Rajya Sabha on July 1.

The bypoll was scheduled for October 24. Four candidates, including Navneet Chaturvedi, had filed their nominations; however, the papers of three were rejected, while Madhu Gupta withdrew her nomination on Friday.
