Randhawa sends legal notice to Navjot Kaur Sidhu, seeks apology for ‘defamatory’ remarks

CHANDIGARH: Senior Congress leader and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Tuesday issued a legal notice to suspended party leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu, demanding an unconditional apology for what he described as “defamatory” allegations levelled against him.

Randhawa, who also serves as the Congress in-charge for Rajasthan, objected to Kaur’s recent statements in the media in which she accused him of corruption. The notice states that her remarks amount to defamation under Section 356 of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS), 2023.

Navjot Kaur, wife of former Punjab Congress chief and ex-cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, was suspended from the party on Monday after she alleged that “a suitcase worth Rs 500 crore” decides who becomes chief minister. Her comments sparked a fresh political storm in Punjab.

The legal notice demands that Kaur issue a public apology within seven days, published prominently in the same media outlets where the statements originally appeared. “Failure to comply will compel my client to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against you in a competent court of law, including Section 222 of BNSS, before the Judicial Magistrate of Batala,” the notice says.

Kaur had earlier met Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and reiterated her accusations, adding that she would return to active politics if the Congress declared her husband as its chief ministerial candidate in Punjab.
