London: Two students from Telangana were killed and five others were seriously injured after two cars collided in Essex, south-east England, on Monday morning.
Police said 23-year-old Chaitanya Tarre died on the spot, while 21-year-old Rishi Teja Rapolu succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. The accident occurred at Raleigh Sapur Chowk.
According to Essex Police, two east London youths, aged 23 and 24, who were driving the cars, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Both were later released on bail until November 20. An investigation into the accident is underway.
“Sadly, one person died on the spot, while the other succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Five others were taken to hospital with serious injuries,” Essex Police said in a statement, adding that specialist officers are supporting the families.
The force has appealed to the public for information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, related to the incident on the A130, a major dual-carriageway road.
The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. In a statement, it said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic road accident in Essex, UK, in which nine students from the Telugu community were involved. The accident has claimed the precious lives of two young students, Chaitanya Tarre and Rishi Teja Rapolu. Our heartfelt condolences during this very difficult time. Several other students are in hospital and under immediate medical care, and we hope for their speedy recovery.”
NISAU added that it is working closely with the Telangana community and consular authorities to provide assistance to the affected students. Reports suggest the victims were returning from a Ganesh Visarjan ceremony when the crash took place.
