Jalandhar: A case of sacrilege involving Guru Granth Sahib was reported in Mahal village of Jalandhar, after miscreants allegedly tore six angs (pages) of a sacred saroop kept outside a gurdwara. The incident led to heightened tension in the area, with angry Nihang Sikhs and members of Sikh organisations gathering in large numbers and staging protests.
Following the incident, senior police officials, led by DSP Bharat Masih, reached the village along with a heavy police force. Security was tightened and policemen were deployed around the gurdwara to prevent any escalation. Sikh religious groups and local sangat expressed strong resentment over the incident. Police said one local resident has been named in connection with the alleged sacrilege, and investigations are underway.
Condemning the incident, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj said that no compromise could be made on the honour and sanctity of Guru Granth Sahib. He directed the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee to conduct a thorough probe into the matter.
According to local information, a woman identified as Jaspreet from village Mahla in Goraya said she had opened the gurdwara around 5–5.30 pm on Tuesday and everything was in order at that time. She said she paid obeisance from outside and left, suspecting that the sacrilege may have taken place around 6 pm.
Police said the situation remains tense but under control, and further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
