Sarabjit Kaur detained in Pakistan to be handed over to India at Attari-Wagah border

Islamabad: A Sikh woman, Sarabjit Kaur, who had travelled to Pakistan as part of a Sikh pilgrims’ group, was detained there recently and is being handed over to India on Monday after completion of official formalities at the border.

Sarabjit Kaur had gone to Pakistan in November to visit gurdwaras during Guru Nanak Dev’s birth anniversary celebrations but later went missing. She was part of a group of more than 1,900 Sikh pilgrims who crossed into Pakistan via the Attari-Wagah border on November 4. While the group returned to India on November 13 after a 10-day visit, Sarabjit did not return with them.

According to information available, she later married a Pakistani national, Nasir Hussain, after converting to Islam and took the name Noor Hussain. A nikahnama that went viral in Pakistan said the marriage took place in Sheikhupura, around 56 km from Lahore.

The 52-year-old woman, a resident of Kapurthala in Punjab, is expected to be brought back to India via the Attari-Wagah border later in the afternoon.
