SC allows Punjab govt to continue services of 1,158 assistant professors, librarians

Chandigarh: The Supreme Court has granted relief to the Punjab government by allowing 1,158 assistant professors and librarians to continue in their posts until fresh recruitment is carried out.

Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains shared the development on his social media account, saying the apex court had accepted the state government’s request to retain the faculty members until new appointments are made.

In July 2025, the Supreme Court had quashed the recruitment of these 1,158 posts, overturning a 2024 decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court which had earlier upheld the appointments. The ruling was seen as a major setback for the Punjab government at the time.

With the latest order, the professors and librarians will continue working until the recruitment process for new appointments is completed.
