Seven Toronto police officers arrested on corruption, organised crime charges

Toronto: Seven officers of the Toronto Police Service have been arrested on charges related to corruption and organised crime, triggering shockwaves across law enforcement agencies in Canada.

The officers were posted in north-western Ontario and had been under surveillance for a considerable period as part of “Operation South”, a high-intensity covert investigation led by the York Regional Police. The arrested personnel are linked to Toronto Police’s 11th and 12th divisions.

In a statement, the Toronto Police Association said the actions of a “few bad apples” would not be allowed to tarnish the reputation of its nearly 8,500 uniformed members, who, it said, serve the public with dedication, integrity and professionalism.

York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween and Deputy Chief Ryan Hogan said they would address the media at a press conference to provide detailed information about the case.

The arrests have caused unease across police departments nationwide, with officials acknowledging that such allegations against serving officers raise serious questions about the integrity of the Canadian law enforcement system. Senior officials at the federal level are said to be treating the matter with utmost seriousness.

Of the seven arrested officers, four have been suspended without pay, while a decision regarding disciplinary action against the remaining three is still under consideration. Further details are expected following the scheduled press briefing.
