SGPC to initiate legal action against Atishi over remarks on Sikh Gurus

Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided to initiate legal action against former Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi for her alleged objectionable remarks about Sikh Gurus.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the SGPC’s executive committee held on Tuesday at the committee’s headquarters in Amritsar. A resolution condemning Atishi’s remarks was also passed unanimously.

SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, who chaired the meeting, said that the comments made by Atishi during an ongoing session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly had deeply hurt Sikh sentiments.

He alleged that the use of derogatory language by an elected representative against Sikh Gurus was unacceptable and reflected a “regressive mindset”. Dhami stated that the SGPC would pursue strict legal action against the Aam Aadmi Party leader over the issue.

Meanwhile, the SGPC president also strongly condemned a recent incident in which a youth violated religious protocol in the sacred sarovar of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib.

Dhami said that the Golden Temple has a well-defined religious code of conduct, and any act that goes against its sanctity cannot be tolerated. Such incidents, he added, cause deep hurt to Sikh sentiments.

He appealed to devotees of all faiths to strictly adhere to the sanctity and established religious traditions while visiting Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib to pay obeisance.

The executive committee meeting also reviewed routine administrative matters related to SGPC management, gurdwaras, the trust department and other allied wings of the organisation.
