Edgbaston: India tightened their grip on the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, after posting a mammoth 587 runs in their first innings on the second day. In response, England were 70 for 3 at stumps.

Captain Shubman Gill led India’s charge with a remarkable 269, surpassing Virat Kohli’s record of 254* against South Africa in Pune in 2019 to register the highest individual score by an Indian captain. Gill also became the Indian with the highest individual score in England, breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 at The Oval in 1979.

The previous best score by an Asian captain in England was 193 by Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan at Lord’s in 2011, a record Gill comfortably overtook. Gill faced 311 balls during his innings, becoming the latest Indian captain to score a double century, joining the likes of MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

England’s innings got off to a shaky start, losing three wickets quickly as India look to push for a series-levelling victory.
