Washington: An Indian truck driver has been taken into immigration custody in the United States after a routine traffic violation in Arizona led authorities to determine that he was living in the country unlawfully.
The incident occurred in the town of Quartzsite, where local police stopped the driver, identified as Sukhdeep Singh, for allegedly jumping a red light and ignoring a stop sign. What began as a minor traffic stop escalated after officers conducted a background check.
Officials said Singh, an Indian national, was found to be staying in the US without valid legal status. The information was confirmed by Border Patrol agents, despite the driver holding a California-issued commercial driving licence.
Singh was taken into custody following the verification and is currently undergoing deportation proceedings under Section 1182 of US immigration law, which applies to non-citizens deemed inadmissible under federal regulations.
