Simranjit Singh Mann’s grandson submits apology letter at Akal Takht over wedding ceremony row

Amritsar: Gobind Singh Sandhu, grandson of former MP Simranjit Singh Mann, on Monday appeared before the secretariat of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and submitted a written apology to acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, expressing remorse over his actions.

The move follows widespread criticism over an incident during Gobind Singh Sandhu’s recent wedding ceremony, where a ceremonial canopy (chhatra) was held over his head and chaur sahib was waved. Sikh organisations and leaders had termed the act a violation of Sikh maryada (religious code of conduct), triggering strong reactions within the community.

On Monday, Sandhu personally reached the Akal Takht secretariat and handed over a letter acknowledging his mistake and seeking forgiveness. Prior to this, he had also issued a public apology on social media, taking responsibility for the incident and expressing regret.

The matter had drawn sharp condemnation from Sikh religious circles, who maintained that such practices are reserved exclusively for the Guru Granth Sahib and not for individuals. The Akal Takht is expected to examine the apology and decide on further steps in accordance with Sikh religious traditions.
