Guwahati: Renowned Assamese singer and musician Zubeen Garg has reportedly died in a tragic accident in Singapore, where he had gone to attend the fourth North East India Festival. He was 52.
Initial media reports claimed that Garg died in a scuba diving accident, though some outlets mentioned a paragliding mishap. The accident reportedly occurred during a recreational sea activity. He was rushed to a local hospital but could not be saved.
While no official confirmation has come from Garg’s family or representatives, several regional media have reported his death. Tributes have begun pouring in, with Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal writing on social media: “Deeply saddened by the untimely demise of our beloved Zubin Garg. Assam has lost not only a voice but also a heartbeat.”
Just days earlier, Garg had shared a video on his Instagram handle announcing his participation in the Singapore event, which had thrilled fans eager to see him represent Assamese and Indian culture on an international platform.
A versatile artist, Zubeen Garg achieved national fame with his Bollywood hit ‘Ya Ali’ from the film Gangster (2006). In Assam and the Northeast, he was celebrated as a cultural icon for his decades-long contributions to music, cinema, and social causes.
Authorities in Singapore are yet to issue a formal statement regarding the incident.
