Haridwar: At least six people were killed and nearly three dozen others injured in a stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar on Sunday morning, police said. The incident occurred when a large crowd of devotees had gathered for morning darshan, leading to sudden chaos and panic.
According to officials, the temple premises were packed when pressure from the crowd caused some devotees to fall. As people from behind continued moving forward, they reportedly trampled over those who had fallen, triggering a stampede.
“There was a massive crowd during the morning darshan. Suddenly, there was a push from the crowd, and some people fell. The devotees behind kept moving forward, leading to a stampede-like situation,” an official said.
Following the incident, panic spread throughout the temple complex. Rescue operations were carried out by the police and temple authorities, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. The condition of some of the injured is said to be critical.
Authorities are probing the incident and assessing whether adequate crowd control measures were in place.
