New Delhi: A woman was allegedly beaten, dragged by her hair and set on fire by her in-laws in front of her sister and son in Greater Noida, police said on Saturday. The accused husband has been arrested, while a search is underway for another suspect.
The incident took place on Thursday night in Sirsa village under Kasna police station limits. The victim, identified as Nikki, was allegedly attacked by her husband Vipin and his family members.
Police said the woman’s six-year-old son told investigators that “someone poured something on my mother, then slapped her and set her on fire with a lighter.” Two videos of the incident, which have gone viral on social media, show Nikki being assaulted and dragged by her hair before being set ablaze. In another video, she is seen limping down the stairs after the attack.
The victim’s elder sister, Kanchan — who is married into the same family — recorded the incident on her phone. Addressing the media, she alleged that Nikki was killed for not fulfilling a dowry demand of Rs 36 lakh. “For the last several days, we were being beaten and tortured for dowry. They demanded Rs 36 lakh and when we couldn’t meet it, they set my sister on fire,” she said, holding her nephew.
Police confirmed that Vipin has been arrested and further investigation is underway.
