Social Media Ban: Student protests intensify in Nepal, PM Oli calls all-party meeting

Kathmandu: Renewed demonstrations led by students broke out in several parts of Nepal on Tuesday, defying the government’s ban on public gatherings and demanding the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

Protests were reported from Kalanki and Baneshwar in Kathmandu as well as the Chapgaon-Thecho area of Lalitpur district, PTI reported. The demonstrators, mostly students, shouted slogans such as “Don’t kill students” in open defiance of restrictions.

The situation escalated further when protesters set fire to the private residence of Communications and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung at Sunakothi in Lalitpur, ANI quoted The Himalayan Times as saying. Gurung had earlier ordered a ban on social media sites, which has drawn widespread criticism.

Amid the growing unrest, Prime Minister Oli announced that he had convened an all-party meeting at 6 pm on Tuesday to discuss the rapidly deteriorating political situation and the intensifying student-led protests. The venue for the meeting has not yet been decided, Oli said in a statement.
