Stray dog issue sparks clash between residents and animal lovers in Nabha

Nabha: As the problem of stray dogs continues to draw nationwide attention, it is increasingly leading to disputes on streets and in neighbourhoods. Tension flared late on Friday night in Nabha when some residents allegedly tried to catch stray dogs and relocate them to a distant area.

When animal lovers attempted to stop them, a heated argument broke out between the two sides, forcing the police to intervene.

Animal Welfare Society member Kamal Kumar alleged that a dog was being placed inside a sack and the sack was tied while it was being taken away. He said they received information from a local resident and reached the spot with their team to oppose the act. Kamal Kumar said the residents abused them collectively and as the situation became tense, they informed the police for their safety.

On the other hand, residents said they are extremely troubled by stray dogs and even moving through the lanes has become difficult. Municipal Council president Sujata Chawla’s husband Pankaj Pappu and former senior vice-president Amarjit Kaur’s husband Harsimran Sahni, who reached the spot, also faced sharp questions from locals.

Nabha Municipal Council executive officer Gurcharan Singh said the tender for sterilisation of stray dogs has already been issued. He added that tenders have also been cleared for repairing two rooms at the animal hospital to create suitable facilities and the work will begin soon.
