Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday led the party’s entire core committee to the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) office in Sector 9, Chandigarh, protesting alleged harassment of Akali workers by the police in connection with the case related to 328 missing saroops.
At the same time, the party issued directions to Youth Akali Dal leaders from Mohali, Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib districts to immediately reach the DGP office. Sources said the SAD was preparing to stage a sit-in protest outside the DGP office if their concerns were not addressed.
While the core committee arrived to seek a meeting with the DGP, the mobilisation of youth wing leaders from three districts added to the pressure, signalling a possible escalation of the protest.
Addressing the issue at the DGP office, Badal alleged that Akali workers were being unnecessarily troubled during the investigation. He told the DGP that if any action was required, it should be taken against senior leaders instead of targeting party workers. He asserted that until police officials clearly explained their actions, the entire SAD leadership would remain present at the DGP office.
The SAD leadership said the protest was aimed at safeguarding party workers from what it described as undue pressure and intimidation, and warned that the party would intensify its agitation if the police continued their actions without clarity or justification.
