Supreme Court dismisses Kangana Ranaut’s plea in defamation case over farmers’ protest remarks

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition filed by actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut seeking quashing of a defamation case pending in a Bathinda court.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta refused to entertain the plea, observing that Ranaut had not only retweeted but also made her own point in the controversial post. With this order, the way has been cleared for the Bathinda court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class) to proceed with the case.

Earlier, on August 1, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had rejected Ranaut’s petition, following which she approached the Supreme Court.

The case dates back to November 2020 during the farmers’ agitation against the three farm laws, when Ranaut had tweeted that elderly protester Mohinder Kaur had joined the agitation for Rs 100. She had also shared her photograph. The remarks allegedly caused mental distress to Kaur, a resident of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bathinda, leading to the criminal defamation complaint.
