Supreme Court refuses interim bail to suspended Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain the plea seeking interim bail and a stay on Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) proceedings filed by suspended Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined to grant any relief to Bhullar and cautioned his counsel against pressing the matter further. The CJI said he would not like to pass an order on the issue if the hearing was forced.

Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had dismissed Bhullar’s plea seeking interim release from jail and a stay on the CBI probe and adjourned the matter to January.

Senior advocate Vikram Chaudhary, appearing for Bhullar, urged the apex court to direct the high court to at least decide the issue of interim relief. Responding to this, the CJI said it would be better not to compel the court to comment further on the matter.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had earlier refused to grant interim relief or stay the CBI proceedings in the petition filed by Bhullar, who is facing investigation in a disproportionate assets case.
