Supreme Court stays bail granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao rape case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the bail granted to former Uttar Pradesh MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case and suspended the earlier order of the Delhi High Court. Acting on a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the top court issued a notice to Sengar and sought his response.

The CBI had challenged the Delhi High Court’s bail order, arguing that given the gravity of the offence, Sengar’s release was not justified.

Reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision, the victim said she was “very happy” with the order. “I have received justice from the Supreme Court. I have raised my voice for justice from the very beginning,” she said. The victim added that she holds faith in the judicial system and does not level allegations against any court, expressing confidence that she will continue to receive justice.

Following the Supreme Court’s order, Sengar, who is serving a life sentence after being convicted in the high-profile Unnao rape case, will remain in custody until further directions from the court.

The case had triggered nationwide outrage due to the serious nature of the crime and allegations of misuse of political influence. The incident dates back to 2017, when a minor girl was allegedly raped in Unnao. In 2019, Sengar was sentenced to life imprisonment. He also faces allegations related to the custodial death of the victim’s father and a road accident involving the victim’s family.
