Tension grips Panjab University amid ‘PU bandh’ over Senate elections

CHANDIGARH: Tension prevailed at Panjab University on Monday as the campus was turned into a police cantonment following a ‘PU bandh’ call demanding the issuance of notification for Senate elections. Heavy police deployment was seen across the campus, with Chandigarh Police seeking assistance from Punjab Police to control the situation.

A large number of farmers entered the university premises in support of the demand. Farmer leaders decided that a group of 50 to 100 farmers would stage a dharna inside the campus until the university announces the Senate election schedule, while the rest would return later tonight.

PUCSC vice president Ashmeet Singh alleged that several students were being prevented from entering the campus. Another student leader, Abhishek Dagar, said the agitation would continue until the government declared the poll dates.

Meanwhile, farmers affiliated with the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) staged a protest near Phase-6 in Mohali after being denied entry into Chandigarh. The protesting farmers later managed to reach the university campus, further heightening tensions.
