CHANDIGARH: Tension prevailed near Sukhna Lake on Tuesday after a heated confrontation broke out between the Punjab Police and Chandigarh Police over the attempted arrest of independent Rajya Sabha candidate Navneet Chaturvedi, who is accused of forging the signatures of 10 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs while filing his nomination papers.
According to sources, a Rupnagar Police team arrived in Chandigarh to arrest Chaturvedi after registering a case against him at the Rupnagar City police station. However, the situation turned tense when the Chandigarh Police provided him security, leading to an argument between the two police teams. It was reported that both sides allegedly pointed pistols at each other before senior officers intervened.
Chaturvedi’s nomination papers were rejected earlier this week, and he has said he will now approach the High Court for relief.
Punjab AAP chief Aman Arora, addressing a press conference, said that the Rupnagar Police had reached Chandigarh with an arrest warrant for Chaturvedi. “When the police tried to arrest him, the Chandigarh Police intervened at the behest of the central government and began shielding him. They even drove him away in a vehicle registered under the name of the Chandigarh DGP,” Arora alleged.
He further said that the Chandigarh Police were “treating him like a state guest” instead of cooperating with the Punjab Police.
