Washington: According to a report in The New York Times, the real reason for the tension between India and the United States is former President Donald Trump’s desire for the Nobel Prize. The report states that Trump spoke with PM Modi on the phone on June 17. During the conversation, Trump expressed pride over the ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Trump then mentioned that Pakistan intended to nominate him for the Nobel Prize and hinted that India should do the same. PM Modi was reportedly angered and made it clear that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan was a bilateral matter, with no involvement of the United States.
The report claims that Trump ignored Modi’s remarks, which escalated the strain between the two leaders. Following this, there have been no further communications between them.
The report is based on conversations with more than a dozen people in Washington and New Delhi, most of whom spoke on condition of anonymity. Sources indicated that the strained relationship between Trump and India could have significant implications for both countries. Analysts also noted that Trump’s policies have weakened India-US ties.
Meanwhile, India is taking steps to manage its economy, but its largest trading partner, the United States, is reportedly unhappy with the developments.
