Train coach catches fire near Sirhind, no casualties reported

AMRITSAR: Train No. 12204 Amritsar–Saharsa met with a serious accident near Sirhind railway station at 7:22 am on Saturday when coach number G-19 caught fire.

Railway staff immediately swung into action and shifted passengers to other compartments. A woman who sustained minor injuries was admitted to Civil Hospital, Fatehgarh Sahib, where her condition is said to be stable.

Fatehgarh Sahib MLA Advocate Lakhbir Singh Rai, along with activists from various political, religious, and social organisations, rushed to the spot. Railway officials soon brought the fire under control, and no casualties were reported in the incident.

Officials said an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the fire. Preliminary reports suggest a short circuit may have triggered the blaze, ruling out the possibility of firecrackers or any explosion.

Railway Police SHO Rattan Lal said the fire-affected coach was detached at Sirhind, and the remaining passengers were later sent onward. The train, which was not scheduled to stop at Sirhind and had its next halt at Ambala Cantt, caused disruption to the movement of other trains passing through the route.
