Trump calls India-US ties ‘special’, expresses concern over Russian oil purchases

Washington: US President Donald Trump on Friday said India and the United States share a “special relationship” despite ongoing tensions between Washington and New Delhi over taxes and India’s purchase of Russian oil.

“I will always be a friend of (Narendra) Modi. He is a great prime minister,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “They are great. I will always be friends, but I don’t like what he is doing in this particular moment. But India and the United States have a special relationship. There is no need to worry. Sometimes we have some cases.”

Trump was responding to a question on whether he was ready to re-establish ties with India as relations between the two countries face one of their most difficult phases in two decades.

The US President, however, expressed disappointment over India’s increasing oil imports from Russia. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump had remarked, “We seem to have lost India and Russia to deep, dark China. May their future be long and prosperous together!”
