Washington: US President Donald Trump has claimed that the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel has come to a halt following an agreement on a phased ceasefire. Trump made the announcement through a series of posts on social media, suggesting that both nations had agreed to end hostilities.
However, just hours after his statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that missiles had been fired from Iran towards Israeli territory. Sirens were sounded across parts of Israel, and civilians were instructed to take shelter.
In a statement, the IDF said: “A little while ago, the IDF identified missiles launched from Iran towards the territory of the state of Israel. Upon receiving an alert, the public is instructed to enter a protected place and stay there until further notice.”
Powerful explosions were also reportedly heard in Tehran on Tuesday morning, around the same time as the missile launches. The blasts occurred just hours after Trump’s ceasefire announcement.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi had said that Iran’s military operations had concluded by 4:00 a.m.
Tehran time. However, the fresh Israeli reports of missile strikes came around 6:00 a.m., raising concerns over the credibility of the ceasefire agreement.
