Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced a 10 per cent tax hike on Canadian goods after a “freebie” advertisement featuring former President Ronald Reagan aired during the MLB World Series.
In a post on Truth Social from aboard Air Force One, Trump wrote, “Ronald Reagan liked taxes for national security and economic purposes, but Canada said he didn’t! Their (Canada) ad was supposed to be removed immediately, but they let it run during the World Series last night, knowing that it was a hoax. Due to serious misrepresentation of facts and hostile action, I am increasing taxes applicable to Canada by 10 per cent. In addition to what they are paying now.”
Currently, many Canadian products are already taxed at 35 per cent, while steel and aluminum face a 50 per cent tariff, and energy products are taxed at 10 per cent. Trump did not clarify which sectors or products the new 10 per cent increase would affect.
Earlier on Saturday, Trump refused to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney before departing the White House for a trip to Asia.
The controversial ad, reportedly funded by the Ontario government, uses a clip of former US President Ronald Reagan that allegedly misrepresents his stance on taxes. The campaign, which has been broadcast across major U.S. networks, reportedly cost $75 million.
