Washington: The conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran entered its fifth day as tensions spread across the region, prompting security alerts and diplomatic actions.
The United States has asked non-essential staff and family members working at its diplomatic missions in Karachi and Lahore to leave Pakistan. The advisory followed violent protests outside the US Consulate in Karachi.
According to reports, the demonstration on Monday turned violent, leaving at least 10 people dead and around 60 injured. Some protesters also attempted to enter the consulate premises. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces across Pakistan reportedly resulted in a total of 24 deaths.
UN seeks probe into attack on Iranian girls’ school
Meanwhile, the United Nations Human Rights Office has called for an investigation into an attack on a girls’ school in southern Iran, where about 150 students were killed.
The strike reportedly took place on Saturday, the same day the United States and Israel launched military action against Iran. However, the UN did not specify who may have been responsible for the attack.
US and Israel respond
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the American military does not deliberately target schools.
Israel, meanwhile, said it was looking into the incident and would examine the circumstances surrounding the strike.
The ongoing conflict has raised global concern as fears grow that the fighting could escalate into a wider regional war.
