Washington: The Trump administration is set to impose sanctions on individuals managing Iran’s Chabahar Port later this month, a move that could affect India’s investment in the strategically important project.
Chabahar Port, located in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan province, is being jointly developed by India and Iran to boost regional trade and connectivity.
Thomas Pigott, the chief deputy spokesman for the US State Department, said earlier this week that the 2018 order easing sanctions on Chabahar had been rescinded.
“The US Secretary of State has rescinded the waiver of sanctions issued in 2018 under the Iran Freedom and Nuclear Non-Proliferation Act (IFCA) for Afghanistan Reconstruction Assistance and Economic Development,” he said.
Pigott added that the decision was part of President Donald Trump’s policy of applying maximum pressure to isolate Tehran. The order will take effect from September 29, 2025.
