Video shows NRI woman chasing alleged robbers with sword in Ludhiana; police begin probe

Ludhiana: A video purportedly showing an NRI woman chasing alleged robbers with a sword on a deserted road near Dehlon in Ludhiana has gone viral on social media, prompting a police inquiry.

According to claims circulating online, the woman, identified as Harjind Kaur and said to be based in Australia, was driving with her mother-in-law and aunt late Friday night when two motorcycle-borne youths allegedly tried to target their car.

In the video, the youths are seen riding close to the vehicle and allegedly throwing eggs at the car’s windshield, a tactic often linked to attempts to distract motorists during robbery bids. As the situation escalates, the woman steps out of the car holding a sword, despite an elderly co-passenger urging her not to confront the suspects.

She is then seen running towards the fleeing motorcycle riders while challenging them. The video was reportedly recorded by another woman seated inside the car.

Woman narrates incident

Speaking about the incident, Harjind Kaur said she lives in Brisbane, Australia, and had arrived in Ludhiana around 10–12 days ago. On Friday night, she and her relatives were heading to her maternal home via a canal-side road near Dehlon when a motorcycle began following them.

She said that after allowing the bike to pass, the rider allegedly threw an egg at the windshield. Suspecting foul play, she stopped the vehicle and picked up a sword kept inside the car. Despite her relatives’ attempts to stop her, she stepped out and ran towards the suspects, who then fled.

She claimed the presence of the sword deterred the alleged robbers and possibly prevented a crime. The woman also stated that women should learn self-defence skills, including Gatka, to protect themselves in such situations.

Questions over authenticity

However, questions have been raised about the authenticity of the viral clip. In the 1.10-minute video, the woman’s face is not clearly visible. The alleged suspects’ faces are also not identifiable. At one point, another motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction appears to slow down as the woman advances with the sword.

Social media users have speculated that the video could be scripted, though no confirmation has been made.

Police response

SHO Avneet Kaur said that after the video surfaced, police initiated an inquiry. Preliminary findings suggest that someone did throw an egg at the car in an apparent attempt to commit robbery, but the suspects fled after the woman confronted them.

Police have registered a case against unidentified suspects and rounded up some individuals for questioning. The investigation is ongoing.
