Voting underway for Tarn Taran by-election amid tight security

Chandigarh: Polling for the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election in Punjab began at 7 am on November 11 and will continue till 6 pm. A total of 15 candidates are contesting in the bypoll, which was necessitated by the death of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal, who had won the seat in 2022.

According to election officials, 222 polling stations have been set up across the constituency, with 114 of them declared sensitive. For the first time in a by-election here, 12 companies of central security forces have been deployed to ensure law and order.

The Tarn Taran seat has 1.92 lakh registered voters, including 1,00,933 men, 91,897 women and eight third-gender voters. The counting of votes will take place on November 14.

In a significant development, pro-Khalistan MP from Khadoor Sahib Amritpal Singh’s party has fielded a candidate for the first time in an Assembly election.

Three days before polling, the Election Commission removed former SSP Dr Ravjot Kaur Grewal following a complaint from the Shiromani Akali Dal. She was accused of acting in favour of the AAP and arresting Akali workers by filing false cases.
