Who is María Corina Machado winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for democracy

New Delhi: The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday announced that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless efforts to promote democratic rights in Venezuela and to work toward a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Machado, who founded SUMET—an organization dedicated to democratic development—has long advocated for free and fair elections despite the challenges posed by Venezuela’s authoritarian regime.

A total of 338 individuals and organizations were nominated for this year’s Peace Prize. The complete list of nominees will remain confidential for 50 years. Last year, in 2024, the award went to Nihon Hidenkyo, a group of survivors of Japan’s atomic bombing, recognized for their campaign to ban nuclear weapons.

The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony will be held on December 10, the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish industrialist and inventor of dynamite who founded the prizes. Each laureate receives 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately ₹10.5 crore), an 18-carat gold medal, and a diploma.
