Widow ends life after harassment over ₹1,000 loan in Nangal

NANGAL: In a tragic incident, a 45-year-old widow, Ranjana Devi, allegedly ended her life after being harassed by recovery agents of a private finance company. The woman reportedly jumped into the Nangal Hydel canal on Wednesday evening after repeated threats from the agents to repay an outstanding loan of just ₹1,000.

Ranjana Devi, a mother of two daughters, earned her livelihood by sewing clothes at home. Her elder daughter, Aanchal, said her mother had taken a loan of around ₹30,000 from a private finance company based in Himachal Pradesh’s Una district to buy a sewing machine. She claimed the full amount had been repaid through a middleman, but recently recovery agents began visiting their home, insisting the loan was still pending.

Aanchal said that when her mother could not trace the middleman, she agreed to pay again but only had ₹1,000 left. The agents allegedly abused and pushed her mother during their visit. Distressed and humiliated, Ranjana Devi jumped into the canal.

Following her death, Aanchal and her younger sister have been left helpless. Police are yet to confirm whether a case has been registered in connection with the incident.
