Badaun: In a surprising turn of events, a newly-wed woman from Badaun district eloped with her lover just days after her marriage, but her husband expressed relief rather than disappointment, drawing a grim comparison to the recent Raja Raghuvanshi murder case.

The 20-year-old woman was married to 23-year-old Sunil, a resident of Mausampur village under the Bisauli police station area, on May 17. She stayed with her in-laws for nine days before returning to her parental home. However, ten days later, instead of coming back, she eloped with her alleged 22-year-old boyfriend from the same village.

Sunil lodged a missing person’s report with the police. On Monday, the woman appeared at the Bisauli police station and told officials and family members, “I want to live with my lover now.”

Police officials helped broker an agreement between both families, who mutually agreed to separate without pressing charges. As part of the resolution, the gifts and jewellery exchanged during the wedding were returned.

Speaking to reporters, Sunil said, “I had planned a honeymoon to Nainital. But if she wants to be with her lover, I will be happy. At least I’m glad I haven’t ended up like Raja Raghuvanshi. Now the three of us are happy — he found love and my life hasn’t been ruined.”

Radha, the groom’s sister-in-law, said, “She stayed with us for only eight days. After that, she eloped with her lover. We only asked for our gifts back, and the matter has now been settled.”

Raja Raghuvanshi, a businessman from Indore, was killed during his honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 23. His wife, Sonam, along with her alleged lover and three hired men, was arrested in connection with the murder.
