New Delhi: Shubman Gill was on Saturday appointed the new captain of the Indian Test cricket team, with Rishabh Pant named as the vice-captain. Gill’s leadership tenure will begin with the upcoming five-Test series in England.
The announcement comes in the wake of the retirements of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, with the selectors opting for a younger leadership group to take the team forward.
Promising left-hander B Sai Sudharsan has received his maiden Test call-up, while Karun Nair has made a surprise return to the squad after a gap of seven years.
However, the squad will be without experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has not been deemed fit for the lengthy series and was subsequently left out.
