New Delhi: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, raising the total tariff to 50 per cent. The new rate is set to take effect from August 27.
The decision has sparked political backlash in India, with the Congress targeting the Modi government for its handling of foreign trade relations. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised the move on social media platform X, calling the increased tariffs “economic blackmail.”
“PM Modi should not let his weakness dominate the interests of the Indian people,” Gandhi wrote.
The Indian government has not yet issued an official response to the US decision.
