Chandigarh: Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar has reiterated the need for a BJP-Akali Dal alliance in the state, saying it is crucial for maintaining communal harmony and peace.

In an interview to a reputed English daily, Jakhar said that the current situation in Punjab is similar to 1996, when both parties came together to protect social fabric and stability.

Jakhar said that Punjab is not just a piece of land, but a deeply emotional and self-respecting society where people value their culture and dignity. “The turban and dastar here are not just attire but symbols of self-respect,” he said, adding that the spirit of resistance in Punjab stems from Guru Gobind Singh’s teachings of standing against injustice and oppression.

He acknowledged that despite the BJP having done no wrong to Punjab in the past, the party faces public resentment today due to its position at the Centre. Jakhar emphasised that Punjabis are resilient and proud of their history but feel their sacrifices have been overlooked and their contributions unrecognised.

“Punjab seeks more than financial packages; it seeks recognition, respect and a sense of belonging,” he said. Highlighting the significance of ‘pagri’ as a symbol of self-esteem and leadership, Jakhar said the people of Punjab need a party that connects with them emotionally and not just as administrators.

He added that the BJP needs to position itself in Punjab with young, credible and honest leaders who represent the spirit of the state. “Our focus should not be on electoral gains but on winning the trust of Punjabis,” Jakhar said.
