Chandigarh: A state-level programme was held in Sunam, Sangrur district, on Thursday to mark the martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal attended the event as chief guests.
During the ceremony, the Bhawanigarh-Sunam Road was renamed as Shaheed Udham Singh Marg. CM Mann and Kejriwal also inaugurated development projects worth ₹85 crore in the region.
Addressing the gathering, Kejriwal launched a veiled attack on Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia without naming him. He said, “Drug addiction in Punjab is now on the decline. Families ruined by drugs now see hope. Big smugglers have been arrested—one of the biggest among them is already behind bars.”
“The one whose name made smugglers, police officers, and even the administration tremble—AAP did not. We caught him and put him in jail,” Kejriwal added.
He also announced that work on improving 20,000 km of rural roads in Punjab would begin in September. “There is no shortage of funds. Development work will continue at full pace,” he said.
