Chandigarh: Ahead of the 2027 assembly elections in Punjab, differences within the BJP have come out in the open over a possible alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal. While state BJP president Sunil Jakhar has been advocating for an alliance, the party’s working president Ashwani Sharma has expressed disagreement, saying the BJP is preparing to contest all 117 seats on its own.

Sharma, during a visit to Bathinda, reminded that the BJP had contested all seats alone in the 2022 assembly elections and the recent Lok Sabha polls. He claimed that party workers are actively working to expand the party’s base in Punjab.

“This is my first visit to Bathinda after becoming working president. Everyone now wants to remove the Aam Aadmi Party from power in Punjab,” Sharma said, adding that people should “look at the statements carefully” when asked about Jakhar’s remarks on a BJP-Akali Dal alliance.

Sharma also met senior party leader Manpreet Singh Badal in Bathinda, with the meeting lasting around two hours. After the discussion, Sharma interacted with party workers and encouraged them to strengthen the organisation in the state.
