Chandigarh: Authorities in Mohali, Panchkula and Chandigarh have issued flood warnings after the water level in the Ghaggar river rose sharply on Friday following heavy rainfall across the region and the opening of the floodgates of Sukhna Lake.
The Ghaggar river, which originates in Himachal Pradesh and flows 165 km through Punjab before entering Haryana, caused damage at Mubarakpur village in Mohali district.
Officials said nine villages in Dera Bassi subdivision of Mohali — Tiwana, Khajur Mandi, Sadhanpur, Sarsini, Alamgir, Dangdhera, Mubarakpur, Mirpur and Bakarpur — have been put on high alert.
At 8 am, the water flow in Ghaggar crossed 70,000 cusecs, prompting the authorities to initiate emergency measures.
