Ghaggar river overflows as dam levels rise, Punjab on high alert

Chandigarh: The water gushing down from the hills has pushed several dams and rivers in Punjab to dangerous levels, with the Ghaggar river now posing a serious threat.

Officials said Pong Dam received a maximum inflow of 3.55 lakh cusecs since last night, pushing its water level about four feet above the danger mark. Bhakra Dam recorded an inflow of 1.15 lakh cusecs during the same period, though its water level remains two feet below the danger mark. Ranjit Sagar Dam has also begun receiving more than one lakh cusecs of water from the hills.

The bigger concern, however, is the Ghaggar river. Its water level has crossed the danger mark at multiple points. On Tuesday, 35,208 cusecs of water entered the river, causing it to breach critical levels near Sardulgarh, Chandpura and Khanauri.

Authorities have sounded an alert in Patiala, Sangrur and Mansa districts. Officials warned that due to the sudden inflow from the mountains, more water may have to be released from the dams at any time, worsening the situation for hundreds of villages situated along the Ghaggar.
