Patiala News (September 8): The construction of the Hansi–Butana canal by Haryana along the Punjab–Haryana boundary without mandatory clearance from Punjab has once again raised serious concern. Officials said the canal obstructs the natural flood flows of the Ghaggar and its tributaries, creating a high risk of submergence in Punjab’s border areas.
During the 2023 floods, the obstruction at the Hansi–Butana syphon had worsened the situation in Samana and adjoining villages of Patiala district, damaging crops, property and public infrastructure.
On Monday, XEN Drainage Patiala along with SDM Patiala Harjot Kaur visited the site. Their assessment revealed that villages Sassi Brahman, Sassi Gujjran, Dharmehri, Hashampur, Bhawganpur and Sassi Teh have been submerged and are among the worst affected.
SDM Patiala Harjot Kaur said, “The obstruction created by the canal has aggravated the flood situation in these villages. We are closely monitoring the ground conditions and necessary steps are being taken to provide relief to the affected people.”
