Chandigarh: Former Akali minister Bikram Singh Majithia, currently in judicial custody at Nabha’s New Jail in a disproportionate assets case, will now have his plea seeking a change of barracks heard on July 17. The court will hear his bail plea on July 22.

Majithia’s lawyers, who had filed the petition on July 11, argued that he should be provided a barrack under the orange category as per the jail manual, given his status as a former minister and MLA, and should be kept separate from convicted or referred prisoners.

The court had earlier issued notice to the Punjab government, seeking a reply by July 14. However, as the government did not file its response, the hearing has been adjourned to July 17. On the same day, the court will also hear a petition filed by the Vigilance seeking a search warrant to probe Majithia’s assets.

Majithia was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau from his Amritsar residence on June 25 on charges of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income and was brought to Mohali.

He was remanded in Vigilance custody for seven days on June 26 and was taken to Majitha and Shimla for questioning during the remand period.

Majithia was later produced before the court on July 2 and remanded for four more days before being sent to judicial custody on July 6 for 14 days. He is scheduled to appear before the court again on July 19 in the same case.
