Jalandhar Rural Police Bust Major Drug Smuggling Racket; Husband and Wife Arrested

Jalandhar News: Under the directions of S. Harvinder Singh Virk, PPS, Senior Superintendent of Police, Jalandhar Rural, and as part of the ongoing special campaign against drug smugglers, anti-social elements, and criminal activities, Jalandhar Rural Police has achieved a significant success by arresting a drug-smuggling couple and recovering a large quantity of contraband.

Providing details, SSP Jalandhar Rural S.Harvinder Singh Virk stated that the operation was conducted under the supervision of Mukesh Kumar, PPS, Superintendent of Police (HQ/Investigation), Jalandhar Rural, and Onkar Singh Brar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sub-Division Nakodar, with the active involvement of Sub-Inspector Dilbagh Singh, Station House Officer, Police Station Sadar Nakodar, and his police team.

On January 20, 2026, a police party led by DSP Onkar Singh Brar, along with SI Dilbagh Singh, was conducting checking and surveillance of suspected gangsters and criminals on the road leading from village Bajuha Khurd to village Jugral.

During this operation, an Endeavour vehicle bearing registration number PB-08-DD-2625 was noticed. The occupants, a man and a woman, on spotting the police party, hurriedly entered a house under construction without doors, carrying a kit bag. Suspecting foul play, the police team immediately followed them into the premises.

Upon entering the house, the police found the woman digging a pit with her hands in the sand beneath the staircase, while the man was preparing to conceal the kit bag underground. Both were apprehended on the spot.

The accused disclosed their identities as:
1. Dharminder Singh Cheema, son of Suveg Singh, resident of village Bajuha Khurd, Police Station Sadar Nakodar.
2. Charanjit Kaur, wife of Dharminder Singh Cheema, resident of village Bajuha Khurd, Police Station Sadar Nakodar.

On searching the kit bag, the police recovered:
• 07 kilograms of opium
• ₹4,900/- drug money

The vehicle used in the commission of the crime was also seized.

A case has been registered vide FIR No. 10 dated 20-01-2026 under Sections 18(c), 27-A, 61, and 85 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Sadar Nakodar, and both accused have been arrested.

The SSP informed that the accused will be thoroughly interrogated after obtaining police remand to trace forward and backward linkages of the drug network.

Criminal Background of Accused Dharminder Singh Cheema

The main accused has a previous criminal record, including:
1. FIR No. 97 dated 14-12-2023 under Sections 18, 61, 85 NDPS Act, Police Station Samalsar, District Moga (recovery of 200 grams opium).
2. FIR No. 49 dated 14-06-2021 under Sections 457, 380, 411 IPC, Police Station Lambra.

SSP Jalandhar Rural reiterated that Jalandhar Rural Police is fully committed to eliminating drug trafficking from society, and strict action will continue against those involved in the narcotics trade, irrespective of their status.

Further investigation in the case is underway.
