Jasvir Singh Garhi calls for strict implementation of SC/ST Act

Phillaur News : A comprehensive workshop on the effective implementation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 was organized at the Punjab Police Academy in which 41 Gazetted Police Officers from various districts across Punjab took part. The workshop was aimed at strengthening understanding of the provisions of the Act and ensuring it’s strict enforcement. Senior officers and legal experts gave an overview of the Act, discussed investigation of cases under the Act and procedure for enquiry into complaints received from National and State SC Commissions.

An interactive session was conducted to address practical challenges faced by the field officers.

Sh. Jasvir Singh Garhi, Chairman of the Punjab State Scheduled Castes
Commission, attended the workshop.Addressing the officers, he emphasized the critical role of the police in safeguarding the rights and dignity of members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

He highlighted that prompt registration of FIRs, fair investigation, and timely filing of charge sheets are essential to ensure justice and uphold the spirit of the Act. He emphasized the need for sensitivity, accountability, and adherence to legal provisions while handling cases under the
SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He also stressed the importance of victim protection, rehabilitation measures, and coordination with district administration to
provide immediate relief to affected persons.

The workshop reaffirmed the commitment of Punjab Police to enforce the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in letter and spirit and to ensure that the rights of SC and ST communities are fully protected.
