Batala: The murder of Harjit Kaur, mother of jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, late Friday night in Punjab’s Batala district has raised fresh concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
The incident, captured on CCTV, marks the first time a family member of Bhagwanpuria has been targeted, signalling a dangerous turn in the ongoing gang rivalries.
According to police, Harjit Kaur was shot dead outside her house, and the attackers fired multiple rounds using modern weapons.
Soon after the incident, a post claiming responsibility, allegedly by the Davinder Bambiha gang, was shared from an account named ‘Gopi Ghanshyampuria’.
The post mentioned that the actual target was Karanveer Singh, an associate of the Bhagwanpuria gang who was with Harjit Kaur at the time of the attack, but she lost her life in the firing.
The murder has sparked questions over the functioning of the state’s anti-gangster task force and how attackers are accessing modern weapons despite heightened security measures.
The Punjab Police now face the dual challenge of nabbing the attackers, some of whom are believed to be operating from abroad, and preventing further retaliatory violence amid fears of an escalating gang war in the state.
