Patiala: A newborn’s body was dumped in a garbage envelope after the father, citing financial constraints, could not afford cremation, officials said. The incident came to light when a stray dog carried the severed head of the baby into ward number 4 of Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, on Tuesday evening.
SSP Patiala Varun Sharma said the father, identified as Girdhari Lal, has been arrested. The couple had reached the hospital on August 24, where the woman delivered a stillborn baby, classified as intrauterine death (IUD).
The hospital handed over the body to the family on August 25, but instead of performing last rites, the father disposed of it in a garbage dump.
A case has been registered under Section 94 of the BNS for secret disposal of a dead body. Police also recovered pictures of the deceased child from Girdhari Lal’s mobile phone.
