Chandigarh: The Punjab BJP today burnt a copy of the anti-sacrilege bill introduced in the Punjab Assembly, calling it a “drama” by the Mann government to cover up its failures.
Addressing a press conference, BJP state general secretary Jagmohan Singh Raju said the Punjab Prevention of Crimes against Holy Scriptures Bill, 2025, had no merit and did not even define sacrilege clearly.
“The Mann government has completely failed and is now trying to cover up its failures by bringing this bill in the Punjab Assembly. At present, this bill is a waste of time,” Raju said.
He said the AAP government had used the platform of the Vidhan Sabha to “create a new drum” for political mileage. While there was a need to bring a proper law against sacrilege, the state government had done “drama” by bringing this bill after three and a half years in power, he said.
Raju also claimed that while it was being propagated that the bill provided for imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life, there was no mention of life imprisonment anywhere in the bill.
