Chandigarh: All four units of the Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant in Rupnagar, which generate 840 MW of electricity, were shut down on Monday due to technical issues, worsening Punjab’s power crisis amid peak summer heat and the paddy season.

According to officials, unit number 4 was shut down around midnight due to a fault in its vacuum pump, followed by the closure of unit number 3 on Tuesday morning. Later in the afternoon, units 5 and 6 were also shut down after a technical snag developed in their belts.

By the evening, power generation at the Rupnagar thermal plant had come to a complete halt. A team of technical experts was working to restore operations.

Sources said three of the four units are likely to resume production by late night, while unit number 4 will take longer to become operational. The demand for power in Punjab is currently around 10,000 MW.
